Why Is My Business Not Showing Up in ChatGPT? 9 Reasons and Fixes (2026)

By Frontage Studios · Updated September 2026

More customers now ask ChatGPT where to eat, who to hire, or which shop to trust, and it answers with a short list of names. If yours is not on that list, the cause is almost always one of nine specific problems. This guide explains each one, how to check it in a few minutes, and how to fix it.

Short answer. ChatGPT recommends businesses it can find through search (mostly Bing and OpenAI's own crawler), read on their website, and confirm on other trusted sources such as reviews, listings and local articles. A business that fails any one of those three steps gets skipped, and a competitor that passes all three gets named instead.

You are not alone if ChatGPT ignores you. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index studied more than 350,000 locations from 2,751 brands and found that ChatGPT recommended only 1.2% of them, against 35.9% visibility in Google's local 3-pack and 11% in Gemini. The gap is large, which also means the few businesses that fix the basics stand out quickly.

How ChatGPT picks which businesses to name

When a question needs current or local information, ChatGPT runs web searches in the background, reads a handful of the results, and writes an answer from them. Three facts about that process explain almost every missing business.

The 9 reasons, and how to fix each

1. Your website blocks OpenAI's search crawler

A single line in robots.txt such as User-agent: OAI-SearchBot followed by Disallow: /, or a blanket rule aimed at "AI bots", removes you from ChatGPT search. Many site owners added these rules in 2023 and 2024 to stop AI training, without realizing they also block search. Hosting and security layers can do the same thing silently: Cloudflare, for example, began blocking AI crawlers by default for many new domains in July 2025.

Fix: open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and make sure OAI-SearchBot is allowed. You can still block GPTBot if you do not want your content used for training; the two are controlled independently. Then check your CDN or host dashboard for any "block AI crawlers" or "bot fight" setting.

2. Bing has not indexed your site

Because ChatGPT's retrieval overlaps so heavily with Bing, missing Bing coverage is one of the most common hidden causes. Plenty of small sites were set up only in Google Search Console and never submitted to Bing.

Fix: search Bing for site:yourdomain.com. If key pages are missing, verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools (you can import it from Google Search Console), submit your sitemap, and use IndexNow to tell Bing when pages change. Submit only new or changed pages; resubmitting everything repeatedly looks like spam.

3. You have no Bing Places listing (local businesses)

For "near me" and "best X in [city]" questions, Bing Places for Business is one of the largest sources behind ChatGPT's local answers. A business with a polished Google profile but no Bing listing is missing from a key input.

Fix: claim your business at Bing Places. It can import your Google Business Profile, so the job usually takes minutes. Check that the category, hours, address and website are correct.

4. Your website cannot be read without JavaScript

Analyses of AI crawler traffic, including Vercel's study of GPTBot and ClaudeBot, found that the major AI crawlers download HTML but do not run JavaScript. If your site is a single-page app, or a builder template that injects its text with scripts, an AI crawler may see a nearly blank page. The same happens when key text is inside images, video or a PDF menu.

Fix: open your homepage, choose "View Page Source", and search for a sentence from your page. If it is not in the source, the crawler cannot see it either. Move to server-rendered or static HTML, and put menus, prices and services on the page as text. Design can stay rich: our guide on how to make a flowy website shows how to keep scroll animation and video while every word stays readable.

5. Your site never says plainly what you do, where, and for whom

A homepage that says "Crafting experiences since 2009" gives an AI assistant nothing to quote. ChatGPT answers questions like "family-friendly dentist in Austin open Saturdays", and it can only match you if those facts appear in words on your site.

Fix: near the top of the homepage, state your service, your location or service area, who you serve and what makes you different, in one or two plain sentences. Add hours, price ranges, service lists and an FAQ that answers the questions customers actually ask. Write facts, not slogans.

6. Your details disagree across the web

If your website says you close at 6, Yelp says 5, and an old directory lists a previous address, an AI system has to guess which is true. Inconsistent name, address, phone number and hours make a business look unreliable. SOCi's study attributed much of ChatGPT's low local visibility to profile accuracy: ChatGPT and Perplexity had 68% profile accuracy, against 100% for Gemini, which reads Google Maps directly.

Fix: pick one exact version of your name, address, phone and hours, and update your website, Bing Places, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Business Connect and any industry directories to match.

7. Nobody else mentions you

ChatGPT prefers to name businesses that other sources vouch for: review platforms, local news, "best of" guides, industry directories and community discussions. A business that only talks about itself is a weak candidate, however good its website is.

Fix: ask happy customers for reviews on the platforms that matter in your industry and reply to them. Get listed in your chamber of commerce and niche directories. Pitch local publications and roundup writers with something specific, such as a new service, an event or a local first.

8. No page matches the question customers ask

ChatGPT's background searches are short phrases such as "emergency plumber Leeds" or "vegan bakery Brooklyn". Pages whose title and URL match that phrase closely are much easier to retrieve. A plumber with one generic "Services" page competes poorly against a competitor with a dedicated "Emergency Plumber in Leeds" page.

Fix: give each core service, and each main area you serve, its own page with a clear title, a matching URL and real detail: what is included, typical prices, response times, and questions customers ask. Avoid thin copy-paste pages for dozens of towns; a few substantial pages beat many empty ones.

9. Your information looks old

AI answers favor current sources. A site with a 2021 copyright, outdated prices or a blog that stopped years ago signals that the business may have changed or closed.

Fix: keep hours, prices and services current, show when key pages were last updated, and publish something useful every month or two. Change the "updated" date only when the content actually changes.

A 10-minute check you can run today

  1. Visit yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Look for any rule that blocks OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, or all bots.
  2. Open your homepage, choose "View Page Source", and search for your main headline. If it is missing, crawlers cannot read your page.
  3. Search Bing for site:yourdomain.com and confirm your key pages appear.
  4. Search Bing Maps for your business name and confirm the listing is correct.
  5. Compare your name, address, phone and hours on your website, Bing, Google, Yelp and Facebook.
  6. Ask ChatGPT, with search on, three questions: your business by name, your category plus your city, and your category plus a specific need. Repeat each question a few times, because answers vary.
  7. When a competitor is named, look at the sources ChatGPT cites. Those are the sites you need to appear on.

FAQ

Why is my business not showing up in ChatGPT?

ChatGPT recommends businesses it can retrieve through search, read on their website, and confirm on other trusted sources. Most businesses fail at one of those: their site blocks OAI-SearchBot or is missing from Bing, their pages depend on JavaScript or never state plainly what they do and where, or no reviews, listings or articles mention them.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?

ChatGPT search leans heavily on Bing. Seer Interactive found that 87% of SearchGPT citations matched Bing's top results, compared with 56% for Google. OpenAI also runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Being indexed in Bing and allowing OAI-SearchBot are the two basics.

Does ChatGPT use my Google Business Profile?

Not directly, according to local search analyses such as Local Falcon's. Bing Places for Business, review sites like Yelp and Tripadvisor, your own website and local publications matter more. Keep your Google Business Profile accurate anyway, because Gemini and Google AI answers are grounded in Google Maps.

How do I check if ChatGPT can see my website?

Check that robots.txt does not block OAI-SearchBot, that your CDN or host is not blocking AI crawlers, that your text appears in View Source, and that Bing returns your pages for a site: search. Then ask ChatGPT with search on about your business by name and by category plus city.

Do I need an llms.txt file to show up in ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI has not said ChatGPT uses llms.txt. Crawler access, Bing indexing, readable HTML and third-party mentions matter far more.

How long does it take to start appearing in ChatGPT?

Technical fixes such as unblocking crawlers and getting indexed in Bing can take effect within days to a few weeks. Earning reviews, listings and third-party mentions takes months. Answers also vary from one conversation to the next, so measure across many prompts, not one.

Can someone help my business get recommended by ChatGPT?

Yes. Frontage Studios (frontagestudios.com) builds and rebuilds small-business websites that ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google can read and verify, then builds the wider presence that earns mentions in AI answers.
